چکیده

Colorectal cancer, also called colon cancer or bowel cancer, includes cancerous growths in the colon, rectum and appendix. It is the second leading cause of death caused by cancers and the third most common form of cancer in the United States [1]. Computer tomographic colonography (CTC) is a minimally invasive technique and rapidly evolving diagnostic tool for the location, detection and identification of benign polyps in the early stage before their malignant transformation. Computer aided detection (CAD) for colonic polyp is a rapidly evolving diagnostic tool for the location, detection and identification of benign polyps on the colon wall on the early stage before their malignant transformation. The typical CAD system as shown in Figure 1, mainly includes: 1) colon segmentation, 2) 3D colon object reconstruction, 3) 3D centerline extraction as the optimal flying-path for navigation, 4) colonic polyp detection using either geometric features or statistical features, 5) color coding for polyp candidates visualization, 6) polyp features extraction, and 7) benign/malignant polyp classification. In this paper, we propose a general framework for colon segmentation and reconstruction. The proposed framework has been validated on 10 real CT colon datasets, and the segmentation accuracy has achieved 96.06%. The 3D colon objects are reconstructed from the segmented slices by computing their isosurfaces using MarchingCube algorithm.

Segmentation of Colon in Tagged CT Colonography Using Adaptive Level Sets Method

Accurate and reliable segmentation of the colon is important for 3D reconstruction, automatic colonic polyp detection and classification. In this paper, we introduce an adaptive level set method for segmenting colon filled with air and opacified fluid in CT colonography. We first use simple thresholding method to remove most of the opacified liquid. Then, closed contours with manual seeds initi...

Variational Approach Based Image Pre- Processing Techniques for Virtual Colonoscopy

Colorectal cancer includes cancer of the colon, rectum, anus and appendix. Since it is largely preventable, it is extremely important to detect and treat the colorectal cancer in the earliest stage. Virtual colonoscopy is an emerging screening technique for colon cancer. One component of virtual colonoscopy, image pre-processing, is important for colonic polyp detection/diagnosis, feature extra...

Colon Centreline Calculation for CT Colonography using Optimised 3D Topological Thinning

CT colonography is an emerging technique for colorectal cancer screening. Using this technique virtual reality models of the human colon are generated from an abdominal CT study of a suitably prepared patient. Manual navigation through these models is a slow and tedious process. It is possible to automate navigation by calculating the centreline of the human colon. There are numerous well docum...

Computer-assisted polyp matching between optical colonoscopy and CT colonography: a phantom study

Potentially precancerous polyps detected with CT colonography (CTC) need to be removed subsequently, using an optical colonoscope (OC). Due to large colonic deformations induced by the colonoscope, even very experienced colonoscopists find it difficult to pinpoint the exact location of the colonoscope tip in relation to polyps reported on CTC. This can cause unduly prolonged OC examinations tha...

Purpose: Computed tomographic (CT) colonography is a relatively new technique for detecting bowel cancer or potentially precancerous polyps. CT scanning is combined with 3-dimensional image reconstruction to produce a virtual endoluminal representation similar to optical colonoscopy. Because retained fluid and stool can mimic pathology, CT data is acquired with the bowel cleansed and insufflate...
